Advantages of Henge 6A UBEC vs. Traditional Linear BEC

The Henge 6A UBEC utilizes a switching power supply design, offering several key advantages over traditional linear BECs, especially when using batteries of 3 cells (11.1V) or higher:

  1. Higher Efficiency & Lower Heat Generation:
    For example, when using a 4-cell LiPo battery (approximately 14.8V), a traditional linear regulator producing 5V/1A output requires an input of 1A at the battery side, resulting in:

    • Input Power: 14.8V × 1A = 14.8W
    • Output Power: 5V × 1A = 5W

    Thus, efficiency is only 33.8%, with the remaining 9.8W lost as heat. This excessive heat may trigger the BEC's thermal protection, causing shutdown and malfunction.

    In contrast, the Henge UBEC with a switching regulator only needs about 0.37A from the battery to deliver the same output (5V/1A), resulting in:

    • Input Power: 14.8V × 0.37A = 5.476W
    • Output Power: 5V × 1A = 5W

    Thus, the overall efficiency is 91.3%, significantly reducing heat generation and improving system reliability.

  2. Ease of Installation (ESC with internal BEC):

    • If your brushless ESC already has a built-in BEC, simply disconnect (or remove) the red wire between the ESC and receiver.
    • Connect the UBEC input leads directly to your battery, and plug its output cable into any unused channel on your receiver.
    • No modifications are necessary to the ESC itself, simplifying setup.
  3. Ease of Installation (ESC without internal BEC):

    • No changes to the ESC are required.
    • Connect the UBEC input directly to the battery in parallel, and plug the output into an available channel on your receiver.

Special Note

Although various measures have been taken to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI), a small amount of EMI is still unavoidable when using switching regulator-type UBECs. To ensure stable receiver operation, please keep the UBEC’s output ferrite ring as far away as possible from the main control board (avoid stacking the ferrite ring on top of the main control board). Additionally, position the entire UBEC unit at the maximum possible distance from the receiver.

Tips

Use a small, pointed screwdriver to carefully remove the red wire from the ESC connector. Once removed, make sure to insulate it properly to avoid short circuits. If you ever need to reuse the ESC’s internal BEC functionality, simply reconnect the red wire into its original position.
